Any golf enthusiast wishing to
book accommodation for the 2010 Open at St Andrews would do well to book accommodation early to avoid disappointment - with a prize purse totalling around £4.5 million 2010 promises to be another hugely competitive classic drawing supporters from all around the world.
Outside the UK, The Open is referred to as the British Open to distinguish it for the other three major Open golf tournaments played each year around the world.
Perhaps St. Andrews maybe forgiven for calling it simply The 2010 Open rather than the British Open as golf has apparently been played at St Andrews since 1574 – so the pedigree does have prior usage. The first Open was actually played at the Prestwick Golf Club in 1860

but was Prestwick was dropped as a venue in 1925.
We have
accommodation in cottages and
castles to rent for the 2010 Open, but history does not record where King James IV stayed when he bought golf clubs at St Andrews in 1506.
Although the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews is the ruling authority for golf everywhere (except the USA and Mexico) it does not own the Old Course at St Andrews, and anyone may play the course.
The remaining Scottish clubs still in the rotation are:
Muirfield
Royal Troon Golf Club
Carnoustie Golf Links
Turnberry Resort
Of these, the Old Course at St Andrews hosts the open every 5 years – explaining why some customers book
self catering accommodation for the Open many years in advance.
